Overview Urticaria disease

Hives (urticaria), also known as welts, is a common skin condition with an itchy rash of pink to red bumps that appear and disappear anywhere on the body. An individual lesion of hives typically lasts a few hours before fading away, and new hives can appear as older areas disappear.

Hives can be divided into acute (new or periodic episodes lasting fewer than 6 weeks) and chronic (periodic episodes lasting more than 6 weeks). Though many people have a single episode of acute hives that goes away within a few days to weeks, some individuals may have chronic hives, periodic (recurrent) attacks of hives that come back over periods of years.

The condition is not life-threatening; however Angioedema is a severe variant and this condition may endanger life if not attended to promptly.

Why is Urticaria disease?

Hives can be divided into acute (new or periodic episodes lasting fewer than 6 weeks) and chronic (periodic episodes lasting more than 6 weeks). Though many people have a single episode of acute hives that goes away within a few days to weeks, some individuals may have chronic hives, periodic (recurrent) attacks of hives that come back over periods of years.

The condition is not life-threatening; however Angioedema is a severe variant and this condition may endanger life if not attended to promptly.

Angioedema occurs beneath the skin instead of the surface as seen in Urticaria. It results in deep swelling of parts such as the eyes, lips, hands, feet and genitalia. Angioedema affecting the tongue, throat and lungs may be life threatening due to obstruction of the airways.

Who's At Risk?
Hives appear in people of all ages, of all races, and of both sexes.

Acute hives are most common in children and young adults, and chronic hives are more often seen in females, especially middle-aged women.

Hives are very common; it is estimated that up to 20% of the population may develop them at some point in their lives.

Symptoms & Causes

Signs and Symptoms:
The most common locations for hives include:

Trunk, Upper arms or upper legs

However, hives can affect any skin surface.

An individual lesion of hives appears as a well-defined, pink-to-red swelling, ranging in size from 2 mm to over 30 cm. Some lesions may develop a lighter center. Hives usually appear in groups or batches.

Individual lesions of hives disappear within 24 hours, though a single episode may last much longer.

Dermographism is a type of hives that appears within a few minutes of scratching the skin. The rash is usually seen in a straight line (linear) pattern.

Swelling of the eyes, mouth, hands, feet, or genitals can sometimes occur with hives. This swelling, called Angioedema usually goes away within 24 hours.

Usually itchy, hives can also burn or sting.

Causes:
Hives can be triggered by many things, including:

  • Medications, especially aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, narcotic painkillers, or antibiotics.
  • Infections with viruses, bacteria, or fungi.
  • Environmental allergies such as insect bites, pollen, mold, or animal dander.
  • Physical exposures such as heat, cold, water, sunlight, or pressure.
  • Medical conditions such as gland diseases, blood diseases, or cancer.
  • Food allergies such as from strawberries, eggs, nuts, or shellfish.
  • Stress.

In up to 90% of outbreaks of hives, a trigger is never found despite extensive testing; these cases are referred to as idiopathic urticaria. In approximately 50% of idiopathic urticaria outbreaks, hives are most likely caused by a reaction from the person's own immune system (autoimmune reaction).

Treatment

Conventional Treatment Why Homeopathy

Dermatologist normally puts you on daily dose of medicine called as antihistamines and sometimes on Steroids.

Antihistamines are the drugs which block the action of histamine. Histamine is the substance which produces rash and itching. When antihistamine is ingested it inhibits the action of histamine, in turn relieving skin rash and itching. However, Histamine release is not the ultimate cause for urticaria. Histamine release is just the result of the allergic process. That means, by nullifying the effects of histamine by using the antihistamine, you are treating the effects of the disease and not the cause of the disease!

Some of the commonly used antihistamines are Allegra (Fexofenadine), Cetirizine, Levocetirizine, etc.

Use of antihistamine for an occasional urticarial rash may be justified. However, if one keeps using antihistamine for months and years together, such a method of prescribing should be considered as very superficial, unwise and symptomatic.

On other hand the homeopathic treatment for Chronic Urticaria is promising.

It is much advanced and more scientific as it is not aimed at relieving the symptoms but treat the disease at immunological level. It is evident that numerous factors such as genetics, systemic, emotional, physical and environmental factors trigger urticaria by destabilization of the immune system. A constitutional remedy is selected after carefully reviewing all such factors.

Chronic urticaria calls for much deeper approach while eliminating the urticaria from its roots. Fortunately, Homeopathy has an answer to such a condition. Self-Care Guidelines
If you are experiencing mild hives, you might:

  • Take cool showers.
  • Apply cool compresses.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes.
  • Avoid strenuous activity.

In addition, try to discover what is triggering your hives and avoid whatever it might be.

When to Seek Medical Care

Call Emergency if you are having difficulty breathing or swallowing, tightness in chest or wheezing associated with your hives. (This could happen in Angioedema).

In non-urgent situations with hives, you can contact us if the hives do not improve with conventional anti allergic treatment or if they continue to appear for more than a few days.

Before visiting us or to your doctor, try to notice what might be triggering your hives and whether it improves or worsens with exposure to heat, cold, pressure, or vibration. Take a list of every medication (prescription or over-the-counter), supplement, or herbal remedy you may have taken recently. Also, recall any recent illnesses you may have had since some illnesses (or their treatments) can trigger hives.

Normally recommended treatment at Preet Homeopathy is 3 months to 6 months or more in some cases.

Usually to begin the treatment we provide medicines for 3 months and further course is decided after the completion of 1st course.

Note:
Extent and nature of benefits of treatment varies among individuals and has been gathered from patients themselves & past clinical records. Though our results aren’t 100%, more than 85% patients treated at the centres have experienced full recovery; many have feel reduction in the complaints and decrease in the intensity and relapses. Children have better prognosis as medicines have no side effects.
